Black Loyalist Heritage Centre - Interactive

The Black Loyalist Heritage Centre tells the story of the world’s largest free African population outside of Africa, in the late 18th century in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Working with Form Media in Nova Scotia, Canada, we were asked to design and build a series of informative interactive touch screens for The Black Loyalists Heritage Centre and a set of additional interactive screens that emulated the Book of Negro

Working with Form Media in Nova Scotia, Canada, we were asked to design and build a series of informative interactive touch screens for The Black Loyalists Heritage Centre and a set of additional interactive screens that emulated the Book of Negroes since the original is held at The National Archives in London, UK.

Given the sheer amount of information that the museum wanted to include in each of the interactive screens, we had to design an interface that was simple to navigate, yet well designed while accommodating quite a large amount of imagery and text.

The Book of Negroes is a historical document that records names and descriptions of 3,000 Black Loyalists, enslaved Africans who escaped to the British lines during the American Revolution and were evacuated to points in Nova Scotia as free people of colour.

We designed this interactive screen in such a way that users could 'turn' the pages (each page was a hi-definition scan of the original book) to get a 'feel' of each of the pages contained in this historic document.

Two supporting interactive screens were designed so users could search names of past relatives who would have been recorded in the Book of Negroes.
